The GoalPOSTS™ framework does not begin with goal setting. It begins with position-setting.

Before you move, you must know where you stand. The six Functions provide the building blocks for doing that.

The Six Functions

Position clarifies where you are and establishes your current reality. It is the point from which any meaningful movement must begin. This means understanding your story so far: the experiences that brought you here, the pressures acting on you now, and the choices available from this point forward. Position represents both your stopping point and your starting line.

Options expand what is possible and reveal the range of viable paths available from your current position. Instead of assuming there is only one way forward, this function helps you examine alternatives realistically, considering what each option requires, what it offers, and what you are prepared to commit to in pursuing it.

Survey is reflecting without stalling and you pause not to plan, not to act, but to notice the situation clearly before committing to action. You can ask yourself what is working? What is not? What resources are available? What needs to change? Tasks turn thought into movement transforming intention into action. Once a direction begins to emerge, tasks allow you to test that direction in the real world. Even small actions generate new information: what works, what does not, and what adjustments may be needed. Through tasks, your position begins to move.

Goal allows for defining or discovering direction. A goal may already be clear, or it may emerge through the process of exploration. GoalPOSTS™ supports both possibilities. Some people arrive with a defined objective; others discover their goal as they clarify position, explore options, and test actions. Either way, the goal becomes stronger when it grows from an accurate understanding of where you stand.

Story holds everything together, providing coherence. Your story connects the experiences that brought you here, the realities you face now, and the future you are working toward. It shapes how you interpret events, how you respond to change, and how you sustain motivation through difficulty. In GoalPOSTS™, story is not background context, it is the thread that links the functions together and enables meaningful change.

Why Story is The Engine

In GoalPOSTS™, Story isn’t a “soft” add-on it’s how the framework stays coherent while you move. This isn’t just a nice idea, it’s ‘research aligned’.

Four-Stage Process

These four stages help bring the functions together.

Aspiration — Where you begin

You may not know exactly what you want yet. That’s fine. This stage gives structure when things feel uncertain. You start to picture a future worth reaching for not as a vague idea, but as something you can feel.

Exploration — Where you look around

Now you explore what’s actually possible. You work through options practically considering what’s realistic and what’s required, whilst beginning to imagine each path that might be taken; what does this look, sound like, and feel like, to live it?

Integration — Where you check in

Before you commit to moving, you stop, you consider. Does this direction make sense and feel true? This stage is important because it tests aligning head, heart, and gut before you invest heavily in the effort it takes to move forwards.

Authentication — Where you prove it

Now it’s time to act. You test your direction in the real world, then review: is this working? does it still feel right? This is where your old story transforms into your new story; it stops being a plan and becomes something you’re living.

The Two Operations

The Operations explain how GoalPOSTS™ converts reflection into progress.

Achieves-Provides Operation

Progress rarely begins with perfect clarity. More often, it begins with a feeling that something needs to change. The Achieves–Provides operation recognises that action generates information.

When you take a step, however small, you learn something new. That information provides insight about what works, what does not, and what matters most. Each action therefore achieves something immediately while also providing new knowledge that shapes your next decision.

The Bottom Line: GoalPOSTS™ allows clarity to emerge through thoughtful action. Progress becomes iterative, action informs understanding, and understanding refines the next action.

Visualisation-Realisation Operation

Change begins with a mental picture but only becomes meaningful when it is lived. The Visualisation–Realisation operation connects these two stages.

  • Visualisation helps you imagine a direction clearly enough to evaluate it. You explore what a possible future looks like, how it might feel, and what it would require.
  • Realisation turns that picture into lived experience. Through tasks and deliberate action, the imagined future begins to take practical form.

As this happens, the picture becomes clearer and more believable. Direction strengthens, commitment deepens, and momentum builds. In this way, change moves from possibility to reality.
